For our Vigattin Radio Program this Saturday, we discussed the recently held AngelHack Manila 2013 and the upcoming 17th Philippine Schools, Universities, and Colleges Computer Education and Systems Society (PSUCCESS) National Conference. Our guests were Mr. Mike dela Fuente (Chairperson, PUP Dept. of Computer Science; Asst. Secretary, PSUCCESS) and DJ Ramos and Elaine Cedillo, Philippine ambassadors of AngelHack.
PSUCCESS
First, we talked about the upcoming 17th PSUCCESS National Conference which will be held in Tagbilaran City, Bohol this July 24-26, 2013. This year's theme is "Enabling ICT Application in the Government, Academe, Business and Industry: The Global Landscape," aiming to update participants about the implementation of K-12 Basic Education Program, mobile browsing, ICT-powered governance, and latest trends in technology, among others.
With some issues surrounding the K-12 program, PSUCCESS wants to provide teachers, parents, and students unbiased information about it. Parents may see this change as a financial burden on their part, but the K-12 program really aims to develop the students' skills at an early age to prevent unfortunate mismatch between the students' college courses and the industries they will enter in the future. Thus, the 17th PSUCCESS National Conference is about awareness and real information about relevant topics in the government, academe, business, and industry.
ANGELHACK
DJ and Elaine gave us a recap on the AngelHack Manila 2013 held last weekend, June 8-9. It was a very successful event, considering that this was the first time that Manila joined AngelHack's worldwide hackathon. The Manila leg had one of the biggest turnouts and our AngelHack Philippine Ambassadors are looking forward to Team Pagesnapp's journey to Silicon Valley. Pagesnapp was our very first AngelHack Manila winner. This is an application that enables businesses to create their own mobile app based on their official Facebook pages.
Just to clarify, the word "hackathon" is not actually related to "hack," which is the act of destroying and defacing a computer program or application by illegal means. Hackathon is playful, exploratory, and innovative programming. With the AngelHack Competition, nothing was destroyed; rather, a lot of applications were created, and one winner emerged.
DJ also mentioned that AngelHack has opened a lot of doors to our technopreneurs who wanted to make it big in the IT industry. It's good to see that our society is already evolving from the tradional "employee mindset" to the revolutionary "CEO thinking". While our parents may tell us to finish our studies to land a good corporate job, our IT culture is leading us towards the big picture where we can be our own bosses. Even when you're still studying, you can start a business of your own.
We are very much looking forward to Team Pagesnapp's journey to Silicon Valley. And also, if you are interested in joining the 17th PSUCCESS National Conference, you may email Sir Mike at mbdelafuente@pup.edu.ph.
