It was another enlightening episode on Vigattin Radio on Radio Inquirer 990 last Saturday as the discussion was about the emerging field of Information and Communications Technology. Vigattin Radio, being at the forefront of the use of information and technology to help improve the lives of Filipinos, has always endorsed the many exciting possibilities of how technology has the power to promote change in the country.
On hand for the discussion on Information and Communications Technology was Sir Marlon, an educator at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, along with his students who were taking up their Masters in Mass Communication degree at PUP. At the outset of the program they discussed what Information and Communications Technology was about, it being a field where the application of traditional techniques, practices and principles of mass communication are used in conjunction with today's advanced technology. And as Sir Marlon mentioned, Information and Communications Technology is the catalyst of change as mass media practitioners apply today's modern technology to good use in diverse fields such as digital marketing, digital media, and the use of social networking like Facebook and Twitter to be more relevant to personal lives, businesses, and society.
The discussion also moved on to focusing Information and Communications Technology at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines and how many individuals and organizations have helped to promote and foster the use of technology despite the university's small budget and tuition fees. One project of note is the Call Center ng Bayan, a 175-seat call center facility that accepts complaints from the public about social issues, where the staff consolidates reports. It's goal is to train manpower and supply the BPO industry with an able and competent workforce. This project is done through the assistance of the Commission on Higher Education or CHED, and is aimed to provide on-the-job training for this particular service sector.
They also discussed how technology has changed the way the university performs tasks, like having online application to their entrance exams, having online applications, making applying at PUP hassle-free. There are also a program underwhay that makes it possible to have online classes for up to 200 participants online in partnership with Microsoft. There are also many ICT related programs which Sir Marlon described it as a real, as a science and an art.
