Last Saturday had another interesting, informative and timely episode of Vigattin Radio on Radyo Inquirer as almost everything under E-Commerce was tackled. Our honorable guest for that episode was Ms. Janette Toral. She is the author of BloggingFromHome.com and DigitalFilipino.com, the founding president of the Philippine Internet Commerce Society until 2002 and lobbied the Y2K Law and E-Commerce Law (Republic Act 8792). An established writer and researcher, she has published research reports tackling various topics including the Internet, E-Commerce, online banking, IT manpower, and many more. Ms. Toral also conducts training on E-Learning, email marketing, internet advertising, blogging, online payment, website marketing and E-Commerce project planning.
She started her journey way back in 1994, an era dominated by paper-white display monitors and prepaid ‘email-only’ internet. The internet offered her the opportunity as a writer and later on made her involved in field of events promotion.
Ms. Toral discussed the Virtual Staff Entrepreneur Program, a free online seminar which consists of 14 sessions available through email. This program aims to help those who would want to start up an E- Commerce business but do not have enough knowledge on the matter. This annual program started in 2003 as a Christmas gift to the general public who wish to know about certain insightful topics. Last year’s program was E-Commerce Workshop Online and Digital Marketing Workshop Online which was made up of 70 free webinars. One can go to bit.ly/nextva for the complete list of sessions and the registration for the program.
She also emphasized the One-Internet Day which will be held on December 20, 2013. The first half of this event was held last November 22, 2013 wherein international resource individuals were invited to talk in a webinar. The upcoming second half would involve club members of Digital Filipino as a celebration for 10 years of this annual public service. One-Internet Day would start 10am then proceed all through 9pm and is free as long as one would pledge a donation of any amount for the victims of Typhoon Yolanda. This event aims to commemorate all of those who gallantly lent a hand to the victims of the tragedy. For more information, one can visit bit.ly/clubten .
The importance and definition of E-Commerce that conforms to the law was clarified by Ms. Toral. She stated that E-Commerce is both commercial and non-commercial. As long as an electronic transaction occurred between two minds, whether that transaction involves money or not, it is considered E-
Commerce. Aside from that, Ms. Toral also delved about the modern digital payment systems that really made it easy for entrepreneurs today to embrace E-Commerce. She also did not fail to mention the current stand of E-Commerce in the Philippine economy, consumer’s mentality and with that provided few guidelines in selling, starting up and investing on one’s skill.
Before ending, Ms. Toral highlighted the future of E-Commerce and its vast potential that many are still unaware of. She is currently conducting a ‘100 Startup Project’ which intends to help 100 businesses that would like to fully embrace E-Commerce and unleash its potentials. It is not a typical seminar wherein one would attend, sit and just listen, but a long-term, progressive and personal mentoring that shall last until 2019.
