The country’s only world heritage city is among the 21 finalists for the New Seven (7) Wonder Cities of the world. Vigan is a fourth class provincial city and the capital of Ilocos Sur. It is already a UNESCO World Heritage Site made famous by its Spanish-era houses and the baroque cobblestone streets.
Other finalists for the New Seven (7) Wonder Cities of the World are Bangkok, Barcelona, Beirut, Chicago, Doha, Durban, Havana, Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur, La Paz, London, Mendoza, Mexico City, Mumbai, Perth, Quito, Reykjavik, Saint Petersburg, Seoul and Shenzhen.
The twenty-one finalists including Vigan beat other big cities running for the New 7 Wonders Cities of the World race such as Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam, Kyoto in Japan, Vancouver in Canada, Prague in Czech Republic, Quito in Ecuador, Casablanca in Morocco and the world-famous Athens of Greece.
Vigan is the lone Philippine candidate in the competition that is initiated by the Swiss nonprofit New7Wonders Foundation. The foundation aims to preserve the world’s natural and man-made heritage sites
They are also the foundation that named Palawan’s Underground River in Puerto Princesa City as the New 7 Wonders of Nature.
How to vote for Vigan City
You may cast your vote just by logging in www.new7wonders.com and click New & Wonders Cities. After clicking you can choose the seven cities of your choice. Aside from the website you can also vote through mobile by using downloading their mobile app in Apple App Store and Google Play Store.
Filipinos should cast their vote until October 7 where there list of twenty-one (21) will be reduced to 14 and the official list of the New 7 Wonder Cities of the World will be revealed on December 7. Anyone in the world can call one of the dedicated phone lines. You just need to put in a code after listening to a short message. The code for Vigan is “28”.
