Filipinos are said to have big hearts, and that there is much love to be shared among their family, friends, and special someones. This is probably the reason why among Asians in particular, Filipinos are the ones who celebrate Filipinos the most and with such flair.
February is said to be the month of love, and for those still hung up on the past holidays and still not in the mood for anything serious, Valentines offers a welcome distraction. Well, at least before any other holiday comes along. This year, 2013, Valentines falls on a Thursday, a work day. Although not an official holiday, many see it as a day to reaffirm affections and friendships or to be thankful for the love and friendship people share with each other.
And how do Filipinos celebrate Valentine's Day? Filipinos are said to be romantics at heart, so they make sure they show their love in a big way on this special day. Gift-giving, of course, is the most common. Giving a rose, a dozen, or even more, is the usual way, particularly for those in romatic relationships. Other flowers are given too, and for Filipinos, flowers are near-synonymous with Dangwa Market, said to be flower central of Manila. Flowers are normally sold at low prices here though the prices spike up a bit as Valentine's approaches, roses in particular. For other gifts, chocolates are also a popular choice, with stores and malls having special sales for them. Chocolates are a big hit here, probably because the standard Filipino both has a big heart and a sweet tooth.
Another common sight in the Philippines during Valentines Day are concerts at many venues. Some even have international performers to serenade those who wish to have a memorable and romantic night with their special someones. Restaurants and hotels also take part in this holiday by having special dinners, meals, and promos catered particularly to those looking for a special place to spend time with the one closest to their hearts.
The ubiquitous malls in the Philippines are decorated with Valentine themes of red and shapes of hearts and cupids. These malls often have programs, specials, promos, and events to draw in crowds so these places are often festive as the actual day approaches.
Other ways Filipinos celebrate Valentine's Day include singing telegrams, impromptu serenates or the old-fashined "harana."
As Filipinos are full of love, expect Valentine's 2013 to be a fun, pleasant, and love-filled one.
