Sabtang is a municipality in the province of Batanes. It is the southernmost island town of the Batanes group of island which is primarily composed of Sabtang Island, and two uninhabited islands: Dequey and Ivuhos. It is known for its lighthouse and the traditional old Ivatan houses of Chavayan and Savidug villages. Like the Batan island of the north, Sabtang also houses white sand beaches and mission-style churches.
The island municipality is politically subdivided into 6 barangays. They are Chavayam, Malakdang (Poblacion), Nakanmuan, Savidug, Sinakan (Poblacion) and Sumnanga. Sabtang is one of the beautiful islands that a tourist will not ignore upon going to Batanes, “The Home of the Winds.” Situated in the municipality, is the beautifully designed lighthouse of Sabtang.
It is one of the three functional lighthouse that was constructed in early 2000s. Together with the Basco and Tayid lighthouse, it was proposed by then representative Butch Abad. The lighthouses guides seafarers across the risky waters of the West Philippine Sea and Pacific Ocean.
The Tayid Lighthouse is the only lighthouse that is not located on Batan Island. One can easily see the lighthouse once they approach the port. Sadly, the land where the lighthouse stands is privately owned so visitors are not allowed to enter the area. Like the Basco and Sabtang lighthouses, it also stands on a hill.
The lighthouse is picturesque and breathtaking where one can see the downhill on
its side that meets the sea. Visitors will certainly enjoy the white sand and pristine water that surround the lighthouse. It is a perfect place to take some photographs of the fascinating nature.
Aside from the Sabtang Lighthouse, there are also various tourist destinations in the island-municipality of Sabtang. They are the Chamantad-Tinan View Point and Cove; Sabtang Villages and Chavayan Chapel; Atanacio Dapilan House, Sumnanga and Ducek Bay; Morong Beach and Ahaw Natural Arch and San Vicente Ferrer Church.
There are tour operators that offer exclusive packages to go around Sabtang Island and see the famous tourist attractions of this lovely island.
