The Vigattin family proves that volunteerism and selflessness is still alive and well within each Filipino as they participated in volunteer work by repacking goods last November 26 and 27, 2013 for the benefit of the Yolanda typhoon victims. The event took place at the DSWD Warehouse in Pasay City, a center for relief efforts for the families and survivors who have been affected by Typhoon Yolanda. The two-day volunteering activity brought about a sense of unity and fulfillment from participants as individual testimonies of happiness and fulfillment that one can only derive from helping others flooded all over Facebook after the event.
Each one had their own task from repacking goods into individual packs, then carrying of sacks of rice and other relief items, to managing the logistics of the packed relief goods from one point to another.
“It was a strenuous task; very tiring but very fulfilling.” – Xenia Rose Dancel, “The labor was all worth it” – Niel Hernandez, “I’m not doing this for nothing and I’m sure I was not wrong with that thought” – Ismael Raful. These statements summed up how the volunteers felt by helping people who are in dire need of assistance. These are statements of fulfillment and joy in the midst of weariness and exasperation.
This group of people was in one heart in gallantly helping their fellow Filipinos as they proved in their own little way that they can do something amidst the disaster. As what Barack Obama once said, “The best way to not feel hopeless is to get up and do something” and that was what these people had shown.
As what Mr. Erick Jayson Correa commented, “We are not here in this world to earn cash. We are here to serve people". That is the Vigattin Spirit; a soft heart for the needy; a heart willing to help out and lend a hand with the spirit of service and selflessness.
