Seng Guan Buddhist Temple

Touted as one of the most beautiful Buddhist temples in the Philippines and referred to as the “Temple of Ten Thousand Buddhas”, Seng Guan Buddhist Temple in Tondo is the center of worship of the Buddhist community in Manila. It is crowned by stupas, a decorative structure which is a characteristic of Buddhist temples, and was built in the Mahayana style of architecture.

Honorable Seng Guan

The famous temple was named after Seng Guan to commemorate the memory of an archbishop of the Buddhist faith. It is said that Seng Guan had lived a life guided by the principles of peace and harmony, as well as the desire to spread his religion throughout the Philippines.

Stepping into the Temple

If you happen to go to Tutuban Mall, you will see the façade of the temple along Narra St. It is one of the things that grasp the attention of travelers. At the entrance, you will first notice some of the weird but wonderful Chinese arts such as the Buddha, bamboo, and of course, dragons. Then upon entering, you will be greeted by the two guardian lions known as Shihi and a golden statue of the Buddha. Inside the temple is an altar dedicated to Kuan Yin, the patron goddess of compassion. On the second floor is where the faithful pray and recite sutras.

Reflection

Though the Philippines is mostly a Christian community, we still have temples of the other faiths that are proof of our mixed cultures that make up our society.

Getting around the Manila City

Manila is the major city in the Philippines. Tourists can go around Manila in many options. Buses, FXs, jeepneys, taxis, tricycles, and pedicabs are available as a mode of transportations in the city. The city is also serviced by the Manila Light Rail Transit System, popularly known as LRT, as distinct from the MRT in other parts of Metro Manila.

Calesas are still used in the streets of Binondo and Intramuros, but mostly for tourists. Which mode of for-hire used depends upon the distance to be traveled, the cost, and the width of the streets.

The Port of Manila, located in the vicinity of Manila Bay, is the chief seaport of the Philippines. The city is also served by the Pasig River Ferry Service which runs on the Pasig River.

The city is served by the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and Diosdado Macapagal International Airport.
