In my entire life, I haven’t seen a livelier street of Christmas lights than Policarpio Street. Though I haven’t been to the place, I know that this street in Mandaluyong is one of the amazing places that one should not miss to visit during the Christmas season.
Way back in 1995, residents of Policarpio Street, Barangay New Zaniga started to become more artistic to show their uniqueness in celebrating Christmas. This famous activity in Mandaluyong has become a modern tradition that is now entrenched in the Christmas culture. And for this reason, the little street of Policarpio has fastly become an attraction where thousands of Filipinos each year frequent the place to see different colorful lights and be pleased with the efforts made by the residents.
One of the must-see sites in the street is the “House of Lights.” Literally, the house is filled with Christmas lights all over on all corners. Another is the “House of Santa”, whose owner has a sheer number of Santa Claus in all forms and sizes. Also, one may see a house that shows a life-sized Belen or Nativity scene on top of the house (with a fountain of sorts and a Chinese lion to boot).
Filipinos once again proved that “When it comes to celebrating Christmas, we Filipinos are all young at heart.” Policarpio Street in Mandaluyong stays one of the proofs that the essence of Christmas is still alive in every Filipinos heart. How I wish I could get the chance to visit this wonderful place.
How to get there
From Maysilo Circle where Mandaluyong City Hall is, go around and when you see the Vets in Practice building turn right. I think this is still Boni Avenue but just on the opposite side of the circle. Go straight when you see a Shell Station on the right, turn right. Go straight; you’ll already see the roof of the lit houses from here. Then on the 3rd corner, turn left.
