Dauis’ Pride: Our Lady of Assumption Church

Bohol is a destination with many fascinating religious landmarks, and one of these, the Our Lady of Assumption Church, even has had a reputation of having been witness to a miracle.

Our Lady of Assumption Church, also known as Dauis Church, is a fine representative of a Byzantine-Romanesque architecture founded by the Jesuits Father Diego de Ayala and Joseph Gregorio.

The construction was conducted by Father Julio Saldana in 1863 and was completed in the early 1920's. It was inaugurated by Cebu Bishop Jan Gorordo on August 23, 1923. The bell tower was constructed between 1938 and 1939. The church was built on the location of an old cemetery where China ceramics were found and were used as grave furniture.

The facade of Dauis Church is Gothic in style with neoclassical ornamentation. The church's interior has frescoes on the ceiling painted by Ray Francia in 1916. At the foot of the altar is a well, which was believed to have sprung miraculously.

Dauis' Patron Saint

The Virgin of the Assumption is the town's patron saint and was said to provide for the town's people. An old legend once said that during the Dutch invasion, the people of Dauis locked themselves into the church. However, they soon ran out of provisions and water. Then a miracle occurred: a well appeared at the foot of the altar. This same well is still the main source of water for people living close to the church. It is said that the water coming from the well have healing powers, causing devotees to flock the church.

How to get there

From Manila, a connecting flight to Tagbilaran takes about over an hour, and several airlines have trips daily.  A boat ride may take a little over a day.
