Cudugnon Cave in El Nido, Palawan

From the towering marble cliffs and enchanting lagoons, to its white sandy beaches, lush jungle and mangrove forest, prehistoric caves and waterfalls, El Nido is one of the top tourist destinations in Palawan, which is often referred to as the Philippines' Last Frontier.  One of these exciting attractions is Cudugnon Cave, a particularly amazing specimen of geological formations that has been found to have archeological value with the bones and artifacts found there.

At first glance, it is a natural wonder that is a testament to the powerful forces of nature as shown in eerily beautiful stalactites and stalagmites along with equally fascinating interiors and elevated cavernous ceilings. The crevices of its cave roof are inhabited by barn swallows and insectivorous bats.

Then there's the historic significance of the cave as it is an important anthropological site, where jewelry and pottery dating back to the Sung Dynasty (960-1279 BC) were found. The anthropologists believe that the cave dwellers were from Borneo, and travelled across the ancient land bridge that connected Palawan from Borneo.  Theories of Neolithic people and burial ceremonies with reference to the cave have been put forward.

For its many levels of significance, Cudugnon Cave is definitely a location one should not pass up on visiting when in Palawan.
