The main island that comprises Batanes province is the Batan Island. It is where one can find the four out of the six municipalities of the province. The four municipalities are located on the 20 kilometer island including Basco, the provincial capital. The other towns are Mahatao, Uyugan and Ivana.

Batan is part of the Luzon Volcanic Arc so it is a volcanic island. The northern part of the island is dominated by Mount Iraya, it is a highly active volcano which last erupted in 15^th century. Another volcano can be found in the lower part of the island. It is the Mount Matarem.

Many tourist attractions can be found in the Batan Island which includes the Basco Church or the Our Lady of the Immaculate Concepcion Cathedral, Naidi Hills, Basco Lighthouse, Vayang Rolling Hills, Tukon Church, Basco PAGASA Weather Station, Fundacion Pacita, Dipnaysupuan Japanese Tunnel and the Alapad Hills and Rock Formation.

The Alapad Hills and Rock Formation is one of the magnificent tourist destinations in the Batan Island.  It is a favorite among tourists because it offers a picturesque view of the Pacific Ocean. The hills offer great scenery of the curvy hill while the rock formation will amaze the tourists. Before reaching the destination one will totally enjoy the most scenic road in Batan Island which is the Imnajbu Road Cliffs.

It is the place where the famous scene from the 1991 movie “Hihintayin Kita sa Langit” which featured Dawn Zuleta and Richard Gomez. Tourists can mimic the scene where the leading lady was carried by the leading man.

Tourists will certainly love the view of the place and enjoy the tranquility that it offers. Near the Alapad Hills and Rock Formation are other tourist destinations like the Song-Song Ruins, Mahtao Church, Chanarian View Deck, Itbud Village, Uyugan and more. Batan Island of Batanes is truly a wonderful destination to visit.
